Jumping right in is def the best way to go.
But stick with stuff you know! Keep it simple and let your play style become more elaborate as you become more experienced...or...just go head first and impress everyone with your quick wit and stunning RP skills like our infamous Admin here....heh....meh....

The best way to get started is just to dive right in, trial-and-error sort of hting. Plenty of people on these forums are new and those of us who have been gaming a while are usually willing to help a new gamer. The more the merrier you know.
