Writing tools!

Post by DocTwisted on Sat Aug 30, 2008 2:14 am

As GMs, and sometimes even as players, we need a little spark of inspiration for just what will happen next with our game, or character, or maybe even we just need a starting point to get the ball rolling. Here's three places I go to when looking for inspiration:

The Artist's Inner Vision Tarot Good for picking a plot or character theme at random. Just click where it says "Ask the Tarot!" and ask it for one, it'll be more than happy to give you a card with an in-depth explanation that can give you a clear direction to go in. Also good for pulling up random cards for a "seer" to show to other characters, if you know how to thread a few cards together.

WotC's Character Name Generator. Because the hardest thing for me is ALWAYS naming the character.

The TV Tropes Wiki Another great place to jump around randomly for ideas, or even look for the idea you're having to see how it's been done before. While it's labelled a place for Television Tropes and Idioms, it also has gaming tropes, movie tropes, and literary tropes... it's a big center for all forms of storytelling.

This site contains a plethora of random generators. Sometimes you just need some random ideas thrown at you and then one will stick.

This site is AWESOME! S. John Ross did a little bit of research and came up with a bunch of REALLY GOOD rules of thumb for populating towns. How many blacksmiths does a town of 5,000 people need in order to operate efficiently? How many big cities are you likely to find in 100 square miles of temperate plains? That sort of thing.
